Does The Saved "BORN AGAIN" Christian Get Away with Sin?

By Upatissa Attygalle

The Bible states that when a person accepts Jesus Christ as his Lord ant Personal Saviour he is forgiven of ALL his sins and is assured of Eternal Life. "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ALL sin" (1 John 1.7). "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3.16). Many people including professed Christians mistake these words from the Bible to think that a saved Christian can commit sin and escape getting punished for it. This of course is far from the truth. To begin with let us consider what sin is. Sin is defined irk the Bible in 1 John 3.4 asks "Sin is the transgression of the Law". The Bible also states, "ALL unrighteousness is SIN"' (1 John 5.17). This means that there are No grades of sin.. In the eyes of God ALL sin IS sin. Further the Bible states In James 2.10, "Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in ONE point, he is guilty of ALL". This makes EVERY human being a sinner for NO man can be ENTIRELY without sin. "If we say that we have No sins we deceive ourselves, and the TRUTH is not in us" (l John.8). Now the TRUCE is Jesus Christ - "I am the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life" (John 14.6). This means that WHOEVER that does NOT believe in Jesus Christ has to face the penalty of death and will be deprived of Eternal Life. "Whatsoever is NOT of faith is Sin" (Romans 14.23).

Now let us see what is the result of sin. "The wages of sin is death" (Rom 6.23). "The soul that sinneth it shall die" (Ezek 18.20). The word death means separation from God and not having Eternal Life. In other words the OVER - ALL effect of sin on EVERYBODY is the condemnation of God and the penalty of death. ALL mankind stands condemned before God. No AMOUNT of man’s good deeds would suffice to earn God’s pardon, for "EVEN our BEST actions (good deeds) are FILTHY THROUGH and THROUGH " (Isaiah 64.6). "For it is by God's GRACE that you have been saved through FAITH. It is NOT the result of your OWN efforts (good deeds), but God’s gift, so that NO ONE can boast about" (Ephesians 2.8,9). Man’s righteousness is really unrighteousness and is NOT acceptable to God, ONLY Jesus' hundred percentrighteousness is accepted by God. When a man comes to Jesus, he comes with EACH of his sins carrying the penalty of death, for it takes ONLY ONE sin to receive the penalty of death. Jesus then forgives him of ALL his sins and SUBSTITUTES the unrighteousness of the sinner with his (Jesus') OWN righteousness so that the sinner would be accepted by God and would receive Eternal Life. "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is Jesus Christ; Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare his RIGHTEOUSNESS for the remission of sins that are PAST, through the forebearance of God;" (Romans 3.24,25). From this point onwards the sinner is saved and is no longer a condemned man. The penalty of death is no longer applicable to him, and he has the gilt-edgedassurance of God's wordthat he now has Eternal Life and that it would NEVER be lost under ANY circumstance. "I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall NEVER perish, NEITHER shall ANY man pluck them out of my hand" (John 10.13).

EVEN AFTER being saved the Christian will commit acts of Sin because it is IMPOSSIBLE for man to be COMPLETELY free of sin in his life, for man NOTONLY sins in deed but ALSO in thought. "But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her HATH committed adultery with her ALREADY in his HEART". (Matt 5.28). "..for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for the man looketh on the outward appearances but the Lord looketh on the HEART" (1 Sam 16(7). EACH sin the saved Christian commits carries the penalty of death, just Like the sins he had committed BEFORE he was saved, but it must not be forgotten that he was saved NOT on the strength of his own righteousness but on PURELY and TOTALLY on the strength of the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Since the righteousness of Jesus Christ is ETERNAL, the saved Christian can NEVER lose his gift of Eternal Life as a result of the sins he commits now. He is now protected FOREVER from the penalty of death by Christ's righteousness which he has through faith taken on as a substitute for his own righteousness.

On the other hand there is the consequence of sin attached to EVERY act of sin. "Be not deceived; God is NOT mocked (fooled or tricked); for WHATSOEVER a man soweth, THAT stall he reap" (Gal 16.7). God is a JUST God and CANNOT condone sin, God will NOT allow ANYONE to get away with sin by escaping be consequence (punishment) that will SURELY follow EACH act of sin. "I am a God who is EVERYWHERE and NOT in one place only. NO ONE can hide where I cannot see him. Do you not know that I am EVERYWHERE in heaven and on earth? (Jeremiah 23.23,24). "Almighty Lord, you are a JUST Judge; you test people’s thoughts and feelings" (Jer 11.20). "I judge and my judgment is JUST" (John 5.30). This rule applies to EVERYONE whether Christian or non-Christian. "For God judges EVERYONE by the SAME standard" (Rom. 2.11). "And EVERY wrongdoer will be repaid for the wrong things he does, BECAUSE God judges EVERYONE by the SAME standard" (Col 3.25). "be sure your sin will find you out" (Numbers 32.23).

Punishments can take many forms of mental and physical trouble, and sometimes even premature physical death. "But the wicked are like the TROUBLED sea, when it CANNOT rest, whose waters cast up MIRE and DIRT. There is NO peace, saith my God, to the wicked" (Isaiah 57.20,21) "I am surrounded by MANY TROUBLES - too many to count! My sins have CAUGHT UP with me, I can see no longer;" (Ps40. ''For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep (die)" (Cor 11.3 "There is a sin unto DEATH; I don't say that he shall pray for it" (John 5.16). Samson had to die for his disobedience to God (Judges 16.30). Ananias and his wife Sapphira also had to die prematurely for their sins (Acts 5.1-9) So we see that EVEN if a man manages to escape human justice on earth for his crimes, he can NEVER escape God's punishment. "It is a PEACEFUL thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Heb 10.31). At the same time, God is a MERCIFUL God and our punishments are ALWAYS less than we deserve - "He hath NOT dealt with us after our sins; NOR REWARD (PUNISHED) us according to our iniquities" (Psalm 103.10).

With regard to the belief that the saved Christian gets away with sin, quite the CONTRARY is true, because he is punished MORE than an unsaved person is punished for his acts of sin. Jesus explained the reason for this fact in his parable of the servant, "The servant who KNOWS what his master wants him to do but DOES NOT get himself ready and do it, WILL be punished with a HEAVY whipping. But the servant who does NOT KNOW what his master wants, and yet does something for which he DESERVES a whipping, WILL be punished with a LIGHT whipping. MUCH is required from the person to whom MUCH is given". (Luke 12.47,48). "Of all the nations on earth, you are the ONLY one I have known and cared for. THAT IS WHAT makes your sins SO TERRIBLE, and THAT IS WHY I MUST punish you for them" (Amos3.2). Christians who are saved enjoy a GREATER amount of God's blessings than those who are unsaved They have a Comforter in the Holy Spirit who lives within them, ALWAYS protecting, interceding, giving understanding and guiding them through life step by step, day by day. They also have the joy of Christ, the blessed assurance of Eternal Life and the right to call themselves Children of God right here on this earth. Therefore God expects GREATER devotion and obedience from the saved Christians than from those who do not have all their advantages in life.

Though ALL men commit sin till their death on earthen there is a DIFFERENCE when a saved Christian sins and when anunsaved person sins.. The saved Christian does NOT WANT to sin. He has a NEW nature that is BORN of God, this new nature is revolted by sinand loves righteousness. He longs to do the will of God. The unsaved person on the other hand loves sin and his OWN way and cares nothing for the will of God.

Let no one deceive you my children: Whoever does what is right is righteous, just as Christ is righteous. Whoever CONTINUES to sinBELONGS to the devil because the Devil has sinned from the very beginning. The Son of God appeared for This VERY reason, to destroy what the Devil has done. Whoever is a CHILD of God does NOT CONTINUE to sin, for God's VERY NATURE is in him; and because God is his Father, He CANNOT CONTINUE to sin. THIS is the CLEAR DIFFERENCE between God's children and the Devil's children; anyone who does not do what is right or does not love his brother is NOT God's Child" (l John 3.7 - 10).

When the saves Christian sins he becomes a ‘Backslider’. The Bible defines 'Backslider' in Proverbs 14.14 , "The Backsliderin heart shall be filled with his OWN ways." The Backslider though he CANNOT lose his gift of Eternal Life, STILL stands to lose a LOT. Firstly the fellowship relation with God breaks and he no longer feels the security and the joy of Christ -in his heart. This results in his direct communication line 'Prayer' with God also breaking - "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will NOT hear me" (Psalm 66.1O). He also hinders others coming to Christ to be saved - "When ye sin so against brethren, and wound their WEAK conscience, ye sin against Christ" (1 Cor 8.12), loses his rewards in heaven - "If any man's work shall be burned (destroyed by God's testing), he shall SUFFER LOSS" (1 Cor 3.15). Further he grieves the heart of God - "Grieve not the holy SPIRIT of God" (Eph 4.30).Life becomes intolerable, so theBackslider CONFESSES his sins, forsakes them and finds mercy thereby restoring his fellowship relation with Gods "I ACKNOWLEDGED my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I NOT hid. I said, I will CONFESS my transgressions unto the Lord; an Thou FORGAVEST the iniquityof my sin" (Ps. 32.5). "If we CONFESS our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness" (1 John 1.9).
